Celebrate Mexican Independence Day in Tulum — With a Local Twist

If you're going to be in Tulum mid-September, you’re in for something special. Mexican Independence Day (Sept 15–16) brings music, food, and celebration across the country — but the best way to experience it here isn’t at a crowded beach bar. It’s by blending culture, food, and nature, the local way.

Here’s what that looks like:

Start at the Ruins, End with the Catch of the Day

Tulum’s archaeological site is impressive any day of the year, but around Independence Day, it has a deeper meaning. You’re standing on ancient ground, surrounded by a Caribbean breeze, just as the rest of the country is honoring history.

After exploring the ruins, we like to switch gears. Enjoy a beachside walk to one of our favorite Mexican-owned beach clubs in the Parque de Jaguar - Cinco Beach. Our friends here serve the best fish tacos seaside. Or order the catch of the day – grilled to perfection alongside vegetables, all served on a wooden plank – a feast fit for a day in the Mexican Caribbean. End it with homemade coconut ice cream or a slightly spicy margarita.

Spend the Day at a Secret Lagoon

Midday heat? We’ve got just the place. Nopalitos is a quiet lagoon just outside of Tulum, perfect for floating, kayaking, or just lounging on the dock with a cold drink. It’s never crowded and always calm — the opposite of a beach club scene.

Hop on the paddleboards, or float just above the water in a hammock to a chill playlist, and take it slow. Independence Day, your way.

Taste the Flavors of Mexico

In true Mexican fashion, celebrate with a taquiza – a Mexican-style taco feast! Prepared by a private chef with local ingredients, our resident mixologist will guide you through a tequila and mezcal tasting before you dig in.

It’s not a wild party. It’s a night of good food, good drinks, and a toast to the vibrant culture and rich history of Mexico. .

Let’s Make It Happen

If you’re here in September and want to celebrate in a way that feels real — not touristy — we’ll help you build it. No big tours, no packed restaurants. Just a beautiful day in our little beach town.

Let us know if you're in town. We'll take care of the rest.
